Under the general direction of the Speech Pathology Manager, the Speech Pathologist evaluates patients, determines goals, administers therapy and makes recommendations for management of patients with communication, cognitive and/or swallowing disorders. Patients treated may range in age from infancy through late adulthood. In cooperation with the Rehabilitation team, the Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for maintaining high standards as established by the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. This position reports to the Speech Pathology Manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Meets all standards of the Patient Satisfaction Initiative Criteria in order to make Abington – Jefferson Health (AJH) the hospital of choice for patients and employees.
Provides high-quality speech pathology services to patients through completion of a comprehensive initial evaluation on all patients referred for services; timely re-evaluations; formulation of treatment plans consistent with patient and family goals; and provision of state-of-the-art speech pathology treatments in compliance with accepted clinical practice, division and departmental policy and guidelines elucidated in the Speech Pathology Practice Act and Code of Ethics to maximize patient functional outcome.
Provides clear and timely written documentation of patient evaluations, re-evaluations, treatment and communication to other team members to ensure quality of care and facilitate reimbursement for services rendered.
Communicates effectively with patients, family/caretakers, hospital and rehabilitation medicine team members via informal discussions, formal patient care conferences and staff meetings to facilitate rehabilitation team effectiveness and quality of patient care.
Pursues improved clinical skills through attendance of at least 1 continuing education seminar annually and active participation in division and department educational activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience: 1+ years of direct clinical experience in evaluation and treatment of patients ranging from newborn through geriatric with communication and swallowing disorders required.
Education & Training: Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited college or university. Supervised clinical practicum. Completed ASHA Clinical Fellowship Year. Passed National Examination of American Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology.
License, Certification & Registration: Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Licensure in Speech Pathology by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Other Requirements: Demonstrated ability to have good working relationship with patients, families, physicians and healthcare team members. Good communication skills and professional presentation.
