Pastoral Care

Under the direction of the Palliative Care Service Manager, the chaplain is responsible for supporting the hospital's mission as it relates to spiritual and emotional care for patients, families, staff and volunteers. He/she ensures that pastoral care, counseling, consultation and worship are provided to patients of all ages and to all denominations. The chaplain practices within the "Chaplain Code of Ethics" as established by the Association of Professional Chaplains.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Two years of experience in an institutional setting.
  • One year parish experience.
  • Theological training at the graduate professional level and a graduate theological degree from a school accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, one of the regional associations of colleges and schools, or its equivalent.
  • Four units of CPE.
  • Ecclesiastical endorsement by a faith group for ministry in a specialized institutional setting.
  • Board certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains or equivalent certifying body (National Association of Catholic Chaplains or National Association of Jewish Chaplains).
  • Ability to work collegially in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to provide spiritual care at end of life and in times of acute life-threatening and life-limiting illness.
  • Awareness and ability to meet the diverse spiritual needs of the patients, families and staff.
  • Ability to work in an organization expressing the values of inclusiveness and diversity to persons regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation, age, disability or gender.
